A Novel Approach to Frame Rate Up-conversion Based on Morphing

This paper proposes a novel frame rate up-conversion(FRUC) algorithm based on morphing. In order to obtain high quality interpolated frames, the proposed algorithm follows prewarping in view morphing to find more accurate matching points, and use three steps to gain dense matching points: coarse matching, error match rejecting and points densifying. Unlike conventional motion compensated interpolation(MCI) algorithm based on block matching motion estimation, the proposed FRUC method uses morphing technique to generate smooth transition between images. This technique overcomes block effect of block matching algorithm(BMA) and provides ability to modeling more complex motion such as rotation and scaling. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional block matching MCI algorithm in perceptual quality and can generate smooth and high quality interpolated frames.
